I’m really happy with how we wrapped up camp today. I think the white team was successful this morning because we didn’t just throw in the towel after we gave up a couple of goals and got down. After that we just pushed even harder. We battled back nicely and that’s what we wanted to do. Yesterday we didn’t quite do it. Today was a much better effort from the guys.
|The Future Caps Cup
It felt good to lift the inaugural Future Caps Cup over my head and share it with the guys. We became really close this week and it’s awesome to share that trophy with everyone. Every player here on both teams had a great camp. It was good hockey to be a part of.
Overall, I was pretty happy with my individual performance this week. I think I had a good camp. It was way better than last year’s. And I think I finished off well, which was nice. It’s going to be good to have the summer to train hard and come back into training camp in August ready.
This afternoon I’ll be at the autograph session and then I’m just heading to the airport to get on a plane back home. It’s been great to meet a lot of new guys and play some great hockey this week.

Yesterday afternoon we had the first game. It ended up as a tie but it was good experience overall. I think everyone was kind of just getting into the flow of the game. It was a fun experience. Everyone was playing hard, which is always good to see. Last night after the game we just had our regular down time, and we went out to grab a bite to eat. You can probably guess where (Chipotle). Afterwards we just headed back to the hotel to get some rest.
Today we woke up and came to the rink right away. The goalies had a video session with the goalie coaches to go over the footage of yesterday’s game, which was really helpful. We went over our play and some ways to improve for today’s game. That’s pretty much all we did before we warmed up and got on the ice this morning. Unfortunately, the game today was not very good for the white team. We didn’t play very well. So we’ll be coming out hard in tomorrow’s scrimmage, that’s for sure. It never feels good to lose like that. We’re excited for tomorrow too because there should be a good crowd. It’s our last game so we want to go out with a win.
After the game and the conclusion of camp I’ll be heading home to Alaska right away and getting back to training. I want to keep improving in the offseason and this camp has definitely helped me move in that direction.

Last night Garrett Haar, Riley Barber and I went out to dinner and then we went to see all of the monuments in DC. That was my first time seeing them, so it was really cool. Seeing the Lincoln Memorial was my favorite. I got some good pictures so it’ll be nice to go back home and show them to my family. After that we got a good night’s sleep because we had to wake up early again this morning for our big game here.
It was kind of different playing in the morning because not too many of us were used to that, but overall it was good. Obviously, the outcome wasn’t what we wanted - it was kind of a blowout. But we have to bounce back now. In the end it was a good, competitive game for the most part and it was good hockey to watch.
This afternoon, we all have of our exit meetings with the coaches. Hopefully those go well for all of us. After that a lot of us want to go see the new Planet of the Apes movie. That just came out today so it’ll be a nice team activity. We’ll get to bond a little bit more before we leave. Unfortunately, we don’t have much time before we all have to head back home because right after the game tomorrow we’ll get on the bus and head to the airport. Tonight is our last night, so it’ll be a little sad. I’m going to miss all of these guys.
Riley Barber is one of the guys that I’ve gotten to know pretty well. I met Chandler Stephenson the last few camps so it’s nice to have him here. A lot of the WHL guys, like Miles Koules, I’ve played against but hadn’t really met before this camp. It’s also cool to meet a lot of the college guys that you never have the chance to meet anywhere else. It’s really unique to bring different guys together like this.
When I get home I’m going to train really hard so that I can come back into rookie camp in great shape. My main focus will be to have a great camp there. I might take a little break when I get back because I’m a little sore now, but then after that I’ll be right back at it and getting ready for the big camp coming up.
Overall, this camp has been unreal. The new coaching staff and management have made everything great. I know that they taught us a lot and helped us a lot. You can see in these games that we’re playing pretty well-structured hockey from their systems that they taught us. Overall, it’s been awesome meeting some new guys and playing some great hockey. It can’t get any better than that.
Last night after our sessions we didn’t do too much. It was pretty low key. We all tried to get a good night’s rest so that we were ready to go for the game today.
This morning we woke up early again. We had a little work out to start things off, then we had a speaker come in and get us really pumped up about our team and the team concepts of the game. He focused on bringing us closer together as a group and really making sure that we understand that the Caps organization is very team oriented. He helped show us what we need to do to get our brains tuned into team concepts the right way. That seminar was really cool and I think that we all took some positive concepts out of that.

After the morning sessions, Chandler [Stephenson] and I actually had to go get our social security cards done, so we didn’t really get a chance to nap, which is too bad. So we were a little tired going into the game this afternoon. But it was great to get back out onto the ice and get into a really competitive game like that. It’s been a while since I’ve been involved in something like that so it was good to get that started. It was nice to get the fun stuff going and show off in the game what we have been learning in the drills the past couple of days. It’s always nice to see preparation pay off like that. Overall, today was a good day and I’m definitely looking forward to tomorrow.

We were out on the ice again yesterday afternoon. The players had skate testing I believe, but the goalies had practice with Mitch Korn. We definitely had some fun out there with the drills. We did a few battle drills at the end, which are challenging but enjoyable. While we were doing one of the drills, we kind of had to push against each other and my helmet came off and hit me in the face, which gave me a bloody nose. But other than that it was good. It was fun to battle because we were a little bit tired so it made us push even more. We had a lot of fun.
After practice we had dinner together and then just hung out at the hotel. Some of us went to Chipotle for dinner again, which is becoming a regular occurrence. Then we just watched some TV before we went to bed.
This morning we woke up and had a little workout, a team building exercise and a guest speaker. We were doing these activities as a unit, which is a good way to build a team spirit. After the workout with all of the guys, we had another goalie skate. I think the rest of the guys were done with their activities after the workout, but the goalies got to work on some specific skills one-on-one with the goalie coaches, which is really helpful.
Then we just took it easy this afternoon. We were able to just eat some lunch and then get a nap in. We’re really excited for the game tonight. It should be fun to finally play against these guys. That’s what we’ve been waiting for.

Yesterday afternoon we went to the Nationals game against the Baltimore Orioles at Nationals Park. It was a little hot at the beginning, so we were dreading that a little bit. But then the rain came, which wasn’t great. We stayed at the stadium for a little while, but the game ended up getting postponed, which was too bad. Despite the rain, it was nice that the group got together and got to know each other better. There’s a lot of new faces that I’ve seen here, so it’s been cool to meet these guys and become friends. These camps are all about meeting new guys and competing together. After the game I just went back to the hotel, and since I was pretty tired, I just got a good night’s sleep.
|It rained so much at the Nats game that we all had to hide under the pavilion.|
I woke up again this morning and had a nice breakfast with the guys. We then had a good practice, but I think it was one of the harder ones we’ve had so far, especially for the defensemen. We learned some new battling techniques, some new systems and what to concentrate on in the defensive zone, which of course is really good for us. After practice we left to have a little bit of Chipotle and then I had a little nap to help recover for the rest of today.
We have testing this afternoon, then after that I think some of us might go check out a movie, which will be nice. I want to go see 22 Jump Street, which looks pretty funny. Today’s the final day of the hard, hard stuff, so it’ll be nice to get that over with and get to the games. We’re pretty excited right now and just waiting for the games tomorrow.

|Everyone huddled under the pavilion for the rain at the Nats game.|
Last night we were at the Nationals game against the Orioles. I don’t know what time it was set to start, be we were sitting there and the players were warming up, but all of sudden they went into the clubhouse. Then we found out that the game was being delayed due to the poor weather and it started raining so we had to take cover. So we all got up and went to the covered part of the concourse to get shelter from the rain and wind. It was crowded under there because all of the fans were huddled under the portion with a roof. I got to know some of the guys better when we were hanging up under there. It was storming for a while and eventually it got pretty late so we had to take off. It definitely wasn’t what we expected but I think everyone will remember that. After the game a bunch of the guys went out and grabbed some Chipotle for dinner. Overall, it was a pretty relaxing night.
This morning we started off with a talk with Coach Trotz, like we’ve been doing for the past couple of days. After that we were on the ice for a session. We faced a lot of shots, so that was definitely a good thing to help us improve. We were working with all of the goalie coaches again, which is always really helpful. We also had a yoga session in the morning, which was great because I was a little bit tight from the past couple of days. It felt really good to stretch out. I’ve done yoga a couple of times before so I was familiar with some of the positions.
Tonight we have another skate and then dinner. If we feel up to it we’ll probably go see a movie after we eat. Other than that, we just want to make sure that we’re well rested for the games tomorrow.
|Coach Mitch Korn and I at the Nats game.|
Yesterday afternoon, after our first session in the morning, we got back on the ice and had a good skate. I worked with Mitch a bit more, which is always nice because he knows a ton about the goalie position. After that skate we went to dinner with all of the guys and then we just headed back to the hotel, because I think everyone was pretty tired last night after so much time on the ice. Unfortunately, everyone was a little too tired to catch a movie. Hopefully we can see one later this week.
This morning we woke up early and after a good breakfast, we had a little break out session with Coach Trotz. We then headed out to the track, and had a nice work out there. We were doing some sprinting activities with weights and worked on having explosive starts. We did a lot of exercises focusing on starting and stopping. We also did some things on the agility ladder, some of it even on one leg. Working out on a track was kind of a new experience for me, but I’m glad we did it because I learned a lot.
After working out on the track, we came back to the ice, where all of the goalies were working with Mitch Korn, Scott Murray and Olie Kolzig. That was a good session and I definitely learned a lot. After that we did some recovery activities so that our muscles will stay fresh and we’ll be ready for tomorrow.
For the rest of the day, we have a team lunch, then as a nice team activity we’ll be going to the Nationals game this afternoon. That should be a good time and it’ll be nice to get to know some of the other guys a bit more.
Yesterday after the afternoon skate I had a good dinner back at the hotel with the guys, then Garrett Haar and I got some sushi just to fill up our stomachs a bit more. We went back to the hotel after, and since it was a long day, we went to bed fairly early.
We had to wake up early this morning, around 5:30 a.m., and it was a little tough to get up but we made it. We had a good workout on the track and learned a lot of new things, which was nice. We did some agility exercises, some footwork exercises, and worked on our strides. We made sure we were doing everything correct so that it transfers onto the ice, and I think it helped a lot of the guys and it helped me. I think it’s awesome that we’re working on stuff like that.
Then we came back and had to get right back at it on the ice. We worked more on skill skating and that side of the game. Then we got to do a few drills and it was awesome to learn some new systems and what ways to work in those new systems. That was awesome. Later, we had Eric Hoffberg come in and give an inspirational speech for us. I know him from Kelowna because he came to talk with us a couple of times and he’s a really great guy. He got us really jacked up and I think a lot of the guys took some positive things from that. I know that he’s really close to Barry Trotz, so it was really nice of the coaching staff to bring him in.
Now we’re just getting ready to have a little nap and then we’ll be off to the Nationals game, which will be pretty sick. I’m a Toronto Blue Jays fan so hopefully the Nationals can beat the Orioles, who are in the Blue Jays’ division. All around the day is looking pretty good and all of us are excited to go to the game tonight.
I arrived to Arlington two days ago. When I first got here I went for sushi with Garrett Haar, who was my roommate at last year’s camp. It’s definitely nice to already have a friend at camp with you. We then got a good night’s sleep so that we would be ready to work out in the morning.
The next day we had a good breakfast and then fitness testing, which was a great workout. Our first session on the ice today went great. The skating coach gave us a lot of pointers to help improve our skating technique. So far it’s going pretty well. We’re focusing a lot on the defensive zone and on the defensive part of the game, which should be good. As a defenseman, I appreciate this approach and I’m looking forward to improving that side of my game.
Tonight we might go check out a movie if we’re not too tired, because two times on the ice is pretty tough. But a lot of us want to go see a movie so we’ll go check one out. Tomorrow is definitely going to be an exciting day. We’re going to be working out on a track, which should be interesting. We didn’t do that last year so that’ll be new. Tomorrow night we’re going to the Nationals game, which should be a good team event. We went to a game during camp last year but got there kind of late, so it’ll be nice to catch the whole thing this time. So far I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of new guys, which is pretty cool. Since I’m here for a second time, I feel a lot more comfortable than last year and it’s nice to be one of the more experienced guys.
