On March 2, 1979 the Washington Capitals defeated the Vancouver Canucks by a 6-2 score in Vancouver.
Paul Mulvey put the Capitals on the board first when he converted a Rolf Edberg pass at 8:32 of the first period. Vancouver had 10 shots on Washington netminder Gary Inness in the first while the Caps countered with seven against Canucks goaltender Gary Bromley.
The Canucks tied the game at 1:54 of the second on a goal by Bob Manno. Edberg restored the Capitals' lead at 9:06 of the second period when he scored with help from Dennis Maruk and Rick Green. At 16:38 of the middle period, Mulvey connected for his second of the night with Dennis Hextall collecting the lone assist. With just 35 seconds left in the second period, Edberg netted his second of the night to give the Caps a comfortable 4-1 lead. Robert Picard and Maruk assisted on Edberg's second goal of the game. Vancouver outshot Washington 11-8 in the second period.
Veteran Dunc Wilson relieved Bromley in the Vancouver nets at the start of the third period. Washington's Tom Rowe enabled the Caps to open up a 5-1 lead with a goal at 3:07 of the third, Edberg and Guy Charron assisting. Rowe's goal tied Ryan Walter's club record of scoring a goal in five consecutive games. Rob Tudor pulled the Canucks to within three at 5-2 when he tallied at 6:36 of the third period. Vancouver appeared to get some life just 22 seconds later when the Canucks' Ron Sedlbauer was awarded a penalty shot, but Inness stoned him to keep the Washington lead at three goals. Jack Lynch ended any hope of a Vancouver comeback when he scored at 7:13 to close out the night's scoring. Hextall collected the lone assist on Lynch's goal. The Caps outshot the Canucks 10-6 in the third but Vancouver held a 27-25 advantage in that category for the evening.
The win gave Washington 48 points on the season, matching the club's total for the entire previous campaign. With his two assists on the night, Maruk matched the club single season record of 46 set by Guy Charron in 1976-77.
