ARLINGTON, Va. – Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) founder, chairman, majority owner and CEO Ted Leonsis, MSE COO and Capitals president Dick Patrick, along with SKYDEX Technologies spokesman James Pitchford, presented Bonnie Carroll, president and founder of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), with a check in the amount of $105,834 on May 10, at Verizon Center.
The money was raised through the Capitals Courage Caps program presented by SKYDEX Technologies. Courage Caps are team-issued branded hats and T-shirts that went on sale March 10 to benefit TAPS for the second-consecutive season.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from 2,774 Courage Caps and 1,858 Courage T-shirts sold during the 2012-13 season benefit TAPS, a national organization providing compassionate care for the families of America's fallen military heroes. Since the program launched during the 2007-08 season, the Courage Caps campaign has set a new record each year, donating a total of nearly $350,000 to charity through the sale of nearly 11,000 Courage Caps in six years and more than 5,000 T-shirts in four years.
To launch the 2012-13 campaign, Washington Capitals American-born players John Carlson, Joey Crabb, Matt Hendricks and Jack Hillen hosted more than 150 children and adults assisted by TAPS for a skating party at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on March 3.
TAPS provides peer-based emotional support, grief and trauma resources, seminars for adults, good grief camps for children, case work assistance and a 24/7 resource helpline for all who have been affected by a death in the Armed Forces, regardless of the location of the death or the circumstances of the death. Services are provided free of charge. For more information about TAPS, visit www.taps.org or call the toll-free help line at 1.800.959.TAPS (8277).
