Three Caps Appear on All-Star Ballot

Tuesday, 11.04.2008 / 12:38 PM / News
ARLINGTON, Va. – Defenseman Mike Green and left wings Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin will represent the Washington Capitals on the NHL’s All-Star ballot, with voting running from Nov. 12 to Jan. 2. Fans will have the opportunity to vote for the Eastern and Western Conference starters for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game, which will be hosted in Montreal on Jan. 25.

For the first time and a first in professional sports, the NHL will provide real-time All-Star fan balloting results at Vote.NHL.com/results. For the third consecutive year, the XM/NHL All-Star fan balloting process, presented by 2K Sports, will be entirely digital with voting taking place at NHL.com. In addition, fans in the U.S. and Canada will also be able to vote via text message using any wireless carrier.

Green, 23, is making his first appearance on the NHL All-Star ballot. The Calgary, Alberta, native finished first among Caps defenseman, third on the team and seventh among NHL defenseman in scoring last season. He became the youngest player since Paul Coffey in 1981-82 to lead all NHL defensemen in goals with 18 in 2007-08. In his fourth season with the Caps, Green is second on the team with four goals and tied for second with eight points in 10 games so far this season.

Ovechkin, 23, is making his third consecutive appearance on the NHL All-Star ballot. A native of Moscow, Russia, he became the first player in history to win the Hart Trophy (most valuable player), the Lester B. Pearson Award (outstanding player as voted by his peers), the Art Ross Trophy (most points) and the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy (most goals) in 2008. Ovechkin scored two goals in the All-Star Game last season, becoming the first Caps player to score two goals in an All-Star Game.

Semin, 24, is making his first appearance on the NHL All-Star ballot. A native of Krasnoyarsk, Russia, he is one of 31 players league-wide to score more than 25 goals each of the last two seasons (38, 2006-07 and 26, 2007-08). In his fourth season with the Caps Semin led the NHL with 16 points in October and was named the league’s First Star of the Month for October.

The 100 players appearing on the ballot were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department. The 2008-09 season marks the 21st year in which fans will vote to determine the starting lineups for the NHL All-Star Game. Fans can vote for six Eastern Conference All-Stars and six Western Conference All-Stars: three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender on each team. A space is provided for write-in votes for candidates not listed on the ballot. For the first time, fans will be able to select as few as one player (either a ballot player or a write-in player).
