Perfect, clear skies and crisp fall weather dominated the day at the Caps Care Classic on Monday in Springfield, Va. But as nice as the weather was, the best news of the day came as the generosity of the participants helped the tournament reach the $1 million mark in all-time contributions to the Children’s National Medical Center and Washington Capitals Charities.

Chairman and majority owner Ted Leonsis, head coach Bruce Boudreau, assistant coach Dean Evason and every player on the Capitals roster participated in the tournament. Center Michael Nylander led the winning group, working with teammates Rick Kay and Pete Kirsch to shoot a winning score of 59 in the scramble format at Springfield Golf & Country Club.

Peter Bondra was stationed on hole number four, where he took a photograph with each group, signed a jersey T-shirt for every participant and even got in a few quality swings.

A number of Capitals alumi, politicians and local celebrities also took part in the event, while Comcast SportsNet’s Lisa Hillary emceed the dinner that followed the round of golf. Since the Caps don’t have any rookies, Hillary got some help from the two players who were not on the team’s opening night roster last season – Sergei Fedorov and Jose Theodore – to spin the prize wheel and present prizes to participants.

The Caps Care Classic, celebrating its fifth year, is the largest of the Washington Capitals fundraisers. This year’s Caps Care Classic has already raised more than $175,000. You can help raise more for the tournament’s beneficiaries by participating in the Caps Care Classic online auction by clicking here. The auction closes Monday, Oct. 13, so fans still have time to stop by and place their bids.
