Caps Host Hockey School at H.B. Woodlawn

Arlington, Va. - Washington Capitals right wing Matt Bradley, defenseman Jeff Schultz, assistant coach Dean Evason and Slapshot visited H.B. Woodlawn Middle School in Arlington, Va., this afternoon, Thursday, Nov. 13, to host the first installment of the Capitals Hockey School this season. The trio began the session fielding questions from students in the middle school’s gym, before directing a floor hockey session with the 80 excited sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.

Led by Evason, Bradley and Schultz instructed the students about puck-handling, passing and shooting, before hosting a skills competition. Following the competition, students scrimmaged with the pair of players. The hour-long program concluded with the Capitals donating a set of floor hockey equipment to the school.

“I had a really fun time,” Bradley said. “Schultz and I tried to teach the kids different skills, and the kids were pretty good.”

All students who participated in the session received autographed player cards from Bradley and Schultz as well as Caps magnets to designate them as graduates of Hockey School presented by Chevy Chase Bank.

Hockey School, which started last year in Arlington Public Schools, is expanding this season to reach five times as many middle school students in schools throughout the Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. area. Hockey School is designed to be both instructional and interactive, with the goal of exposing students to floor hockey and teaching proper technique.
