The Washington Capitals Hockey School presented by Chevy Chase Bank continues this season with a visit to River Bend Middle School in Sterling, Va. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, Capitals representatives visited the school, teaching 150 sixth-grade students how to play hockey.

During the one-hour-and fifteen-minute session, students received instruction from Rob Lorenzen, General Manager of Ashburn Ice House, a Capitals platinum-level rink partner, along with Troy MacCormick and two members of the Virginia Wild hockey club. Slapshot was also on hand to excite the students and partake in the activities.

The Hockey School clinic focused on ensuring that students learned several important hockey skills, including proper stick handling, passing and shooting techniques. Students also had the opportunity to examine authentic hockey equipment, including gloves and pads. The session concluded with students participating in a scrimmage.

To designate them as graduates of Hockey School, all students who participated in the clinic received a Caps hockey 101 booklet, an autographed player card, a squishy puck and a pocket schedule as well as a Chevy Chase Bank bag, calculator and pen.

With its success last season, the Washington Capitals Hockey School presented by Chevy Chase Bank has returned this year with the focus of expanding into Washington, D.C., metropolitan area middle schools. Hockey School is designed to be both instructional and interactive, with the goal of exposing students to hockey and teaching proper technique.
