Following their excursion to the mess hall, the Capitals and Wizards visited the hospital on base, Malcolm Grow Medical Center, to meet troops returning to the states after being injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
For many of the players, the outing was a chance to get to thank those people who risk their lives on a daily basis to protect our country.
“I like to come out and meet the people that have been over there,” commented Caps forward David Steckel. “It’s better than just signing a piece of paper and saying, ‘Hey, thanks for your help.’ To actually be able to do this face-to-face means a lot more.”
After visiting with troops at the hospital and signing autographs for hospital staff, the Capitals players were treated to a unique experience on the base. The group received a tour of Air Force Two, the jet that services the Vice President and other high-ranking U.S. officials.
