Washington Capitals center Boyd Gordon visited the fifth-grade class of Shaun Markley at St. Elizabeth School on Tuesday, Nov. 27. This appearance at the Rockville, Md., school was the first in a series of monthly classroom visits by Capitals players through the team’s Reading Is Cool program presented by Chevy Chase Bank.

During the visit, Gordon congratulated the class on all 28 students completing the reading goals for the month of October. Each student read at least one fiction book and one non-fiction book during the month of October. Sixteen students read more than the requirement, which is encouraged in the Reading Is Cool program.

Gordon answered a variety of student questions, autographed player cards and students’ Capitals gear and took a group photo with the class. He also brought gift bags containing rally towels, schedule magnets and glowing noise makers.

Each month classes that are participating in Reading Is Cool are eligible for either a classroom visit by a Capitals player or tickets to a predetermined home game if all students complete the specified goals.

Additionally, Jamie Penney’s fourth-grade class at Colin Powell Elementary School in Centreville, Va., was rewarded for its outstanding reading achievement during the month of October. On Saturday, Nov. 24, the fourth-grade students, their families and Penney attended the Capitals game versus the Carolina Hurricanes. The students were recognized in-game and encouraged to keep up their good reading habits.
