Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green and Dean Evason Host Capitals Hockey School at Arlington?s Williamsburg Middle School

Thursday, 01.17.2008 / 1:10 PM / Community
Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, defenseman Mike Green and assistant coach Dean Evason visited Williamsburg Middle School in Arlington, Va., this afternoon, Wednesday, Jan. 16, to host the third installment of the Capitals Hockey School. The trio began the session fielding questions from students in the middle school’s gym, before directing a floor hockey session with the 250 excited sixth-graders.

Led by Evason, Ovechkin and Green instructed the students about puck-handling, passing and shooting, before hosting a mini-skills competition. The bleachers were filled with students cheering for Ovechkin, a 2008 All-Star selection, and Green, the NHL’s leader in goals scored by a defenseman (13). Following the competition, students scrimmaged with the pair of players. The hour-long program concluded with the Capitals donating a set of floor hockey equipment to the school.

“I had fun,” Ovechkin said. “We tried to teach a lot of things, and these kids were pretty good. I’m very happy that my team beat Greenie’s team, too.”

All students who participated in the session received autographs from Ovechkin and Green as well as foam pucks to designate them as graduates of Hockey School.

This season, Hockey School is targeted for middle schools in Arlington Public Schools (APS). With the success of the initiative, Hockey School is intended to expand into additional Washington, D.C., metropolitan area middle schools in seasons to come. Hockey School is designed to be both instructional and interactive, with the goal of exposing students to floor hockey and teaching proper technique.
