Caps' Kids Camp Comes to Kettler
This summer fans won’t have to travel far, and they will be able to watch Caps prospects practicing at the new facility for four full days from Wed. Jul. 11-Sat. Jul. 14. The players will hit the ice in two groups, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. While one group is on the ice, the other will be undergoing off-ice training (closed to the public) that includes physical and strength conditioning, nutritional counseling and other training.
Each day’s schedule will conclude with a scrimmage from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Players will arrive on Tuesday and head back to their respective homes on Sunday.
As usual, the roster for the team’s development camp is in a state of semi-flux, even at this late date. Several players who hope to be at the camp are often last minute scratches for various reasons, and several others are often brought in as late additions.
Each of Washington’s five first-round picks in the last three NHL Entry Drafts is confirmed and expected to arrive next week. That fivesome includes Karl Alzner (2007), Nicklas Backstrom and Simeon Varlamov (2006) and Sasha Pokulok and Joe Finley (2005).
Several other Capitals draftees dating as far back as the 2003 NHL Entry Draft (Stephen Werner) are expected to attend. The projected attendee list is heavy with players from the 2006 and 2007 Entry Drafts, and also includes several players from both the U.S. collegiate and European ranks.
