Caps Night at RFK Recap

It wasn’t on the ice that five members of the Washington Capitals were showing off their athletic abilities last night, but rather it was on the field at RFK Stadium, home of the Washington Nationals. Captain Chris Clark and teammates Steve Eminger, Matt Pettinger, Tom Poti and Brian Sutherby each took part in “Caps Night,” at RFK, signing autographs for fans and even getting a chance to take batting practice prior to the 7 p.m. game vs. the New York Mets.
For the second consecutive season, Clark, Eminger and Sutherby exchanged a pair of hockey gloves for batting gloves and took a few good swings in the cage. For Tom Poti, one of the newest additions to the Capitals lineup, it had been a little bit longer since he’d picked up a bat. He shook off a 15-year retirement from the game before belting a few pitches last night.
“It felt awesome,” said Poti after exiting the cage. “It was a lot of fun to do this, to be able to be out here on a major league baseball field. It was cool.”
Pettinger also felt a bit of pressure, as it was his first appearance on the major league field as well. He made sure not to be the first player to hit in the cage.
After taking their fair share of swings, the guys played catch on the field and even shagged some of the Nationals’ balls prior to gametime. Though each player enjoyed the experience, it was confirmation that they made the correct choice in pursuing hockey as a career.
Prior to the first pitch, the players were introduced in an on-field ceremony. During the game, the guys signed autographs for fans who lined up outside of the stadium’s Diamond Club.
