Garrett Mitchell, Washington's sixth choice (175th overall) in 2009 draft
Sixth Round, 175th overall – Garrett Mitchell, center-right wing, Regina (WHL). Born Sept. 2, 1991. 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, shoots right.
In Regina’s Garrett Mitchell, the Caps claimed their third forward of the 2009 Entry Draft. Listed by some sources as a center and others as a winger, Mitchell is a Western Hockey League player who the Caps believe will assume a leadership role (wearing a letter) for his club next season.
Mitchell was ranked at 106 by the NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau in the midseason rankings. He was 148th in the CSB’s final rankings.
Red Line Report (ranked no. 147): “Non-stop motor revs on high, just can’t put puck in.”
ISS (ranked no. 92): “He loves to compete and shows the grit that any coach would want for his team. Good offensive instincts and patience with the puck. Competes hard in every key zone and on every shift. Has tendency to take some undisciplined penalties and needs to control his emotional game. He plays a great third line checking role and sees some spot duty on the PP. In the past has had international experience helping Canada win gold at the U-18 in the past summer and also played for the U18 this past spring.”
