Fans donated 30,516 meals to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals, Tires Plus, Bridgestone Tires, Comcast SportsNet, Mix 107.3 and the Edge 105.9 hosted a canned food drive at the Caps game against the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 20 to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. Caps fans donated 3,750 pounds of food – almost two tons – which was more than 1,000 pounds more than last year’s drive. The Capital Area Food Bank also collected $1,422.65 at the drive, in addition to a $7,500 donation from Tires Plus and Bridgestone Tires. In total 30,516 meals will be provided with donations collected by the Caps.

Capitals players’ wives and girlfriends Crystal Boudreau, Karie Erskine, Rachel Fehr, Mackenzie Keeley, Sasha Bradley, Diondra Steckel and Aimee Laing greeted fans at the F Street entrance along with volunteers from the Capital Area Food Bank. Fans who provided nonperishable food or monetary donations received a poster featuring Caps star center and canned food drive spokesman Nicklas Backstrom.

This is the latest of Backstrom’s endeavors to combat hunger in the Washington, D.C., area. On Nov. 2 Backstrom, Mix 107.3’s Chilli Amar, Tires Plus’s Gary Dexter and Comcast SportsNet’s Lisa Hillary participated in The Salvation Army’s Grate Patrol program by delivering meals and hooded sweatshirts to the homeless in Northwest Washington, D.C. In the past he has volunteered at Miracle on 7th Street, a holiday charity event at the District Chophouse.

“To have the Washington Capitals support us during these tough economic times is a tremendous help. An increasing number of families, seniors and working adults are struggling just to make ends meet,” said Capital Area Food Bank President and CEO Lynn Brantley. “Because the Capitals are engaging the community to join in the struggle to end hunger, it is even more impactful and for that we are grateful.”

The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest public nonprofit food and nutrition education resource in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Last year, the Capital Area Food Bank distributed 23 million pounds of food, including 6.6 million pounds of fresh produce, to more than 700 partner agencies. The Capital Area Food Bank has served the National Capital region for 29 years.
