The Washington Capitals have recalled goaltender Michal Neuvirth from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov has sustained a lower-body injury and is day-to-day.
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled goaltender Michal Neuvirth from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov has sustained a lower-body injury and is day-to-day.

Neuvirth (NOY-vihrt), 21, is a second-year pro who stands 6’1”, 190 pounds. The Usi Labem, Czech Republic, native is 10-5-0 with Hershey this year. He ranks sixth in the AHL with a 1.99 GAA and seventh with a .929 save percentage. Neuvirth is 9-2-0 in his last 11 games and has allowed two goals or fewer in nine of those 11 games. He has one shutout on the season, a 42-save performance in a 5-0 win against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Nov. 29.

This is Neuvirth’s second recall of the season. He has played in one game for the Capitals this year and made 19 saves in a 3-2 home loss to Montreal on Nov. 20. Neuvirth, who wears No. 30 for Washington, made his NHL debut last season on Feb. 14, earning a win at Tampa Bay. He has played in six career NHL games and has a 2-2-0 record. Neuvirth led Hershey to the Calder Cup last year and received the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the AHL’s playoff MVP. He was 16-6 in the playoffs with a 1.92 GAA.
