Capitals Recall Braden Holtby, Assign Michal Neuvirth to Hershey

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled goaltender Braden Holtby from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and assigned goaltender Michal Neuvirth to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Holtby, 20, is a first-year pro who stands 6’1”, 209 pounds. He has split this season with Hershey and the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) while also making two appearances as a backup for the Capitals (Oct. 17 vs. Nashville, Jan. 27 vs. Anaheim).

Holtby has posted a 16-2-1 record with Hershey and has a 2.04 goals-against average (fifth in the league) and .928 save percentage (seventh in the league). He has won five straight games for the Bears. In South Carolina Holtby posted a 7-2-1-2 record with a 2.95 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage, earning a spot in the ECHL All-Star Game.

The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, native was the Capitals’ fourth-round choice, 93rd overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Holtby, No. 70 with Washington, is available for this afternoon’s game against Tampa Bay.

Neuvirth, 21, has split this season between Washington and Hershey. He has compiled an 8-4-0 record, 2.75 goals-against average and .911 save percentage with the Capitals. Fourteen of his 15 appearances have come since his most recent recall, Dec. 9, and he has won three straight for the Capitals.

In Hershey, Neuvirth has posted a 10-5-0 record with a 1.99 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage. He was selected to the AHL All-Star Game but was unable to participate due to his recall with Washington.
