Green loves to go when it comes to cars

Lots of professional athletes like to own a fast car, but Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green considers himself an automobile connoisseur.

Green already owns four, and he loves customizing them as much as he adores driving them.

“I just really enjoy cars, and have always been a fanatic, whether it is putting wheels on a car or something like that – I just love them,” Green said.

When Green was still trying to establish himself as an NHL regular, he got around town in a Nissan 350Z. Then he became a star, and earned a lucrative four-year contract in the process, so it was time to upgrade.

He bought a black Cadillac Escalade and had it customized with some red that made it unmistakably his. That was just a warm-up before he purchased his dream car – a white Lamborghini Gallardo.

For most of last season Green’s Gallardo stood out in the parking lot at Kettler Capitals Iceplex or at Verizon Center. This year Green added a new car to his stable – a black Bentley Continental GT.

“It is hard to drive the Lambo around here in Arlington and downtown,” Green said. “The roads aren’t that great, so I needed something new. I just needed more of a practical car. Now that I have this, it is a little more practical than the Lamborghini.”

As much as Green liked to tinker with his previous cars, he didn’t have to do anything to the Bentley. He said it came with a lot of factory upgrades, and he decided against adding any personal touches.

Green also decided after last season that he didn’t want to continue having his SUV shipped back and forth between Calgary and Northern Virginia, so he left it at home when he arrived for training camp. Not to worry, he added car No. 4 to his collection – a white Cadillac Escalade.

And this one is a little more eco-friendly for good measure.

“I know it is hard on gas, so I got a hybrid, and it is great,” Green said. “I love that truck.”
