ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have teamed up with the Inova Blood Donor Services to participate in their annual summer block party on Saturday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Dulles Donor Center in Sterling, Va. Capitals defenseman John Carlson will be in attendance part of the day to sign autographs for the donors. All fans who attempt to donate blood the day of the drive will receive a limited edition Carlson bobblehead and a Carlson jersey T-shirt.

Inova Blood Donor Services collects blood at blood drives and four donor centers in Northern Virginia. Appointments to donate blood are required. To schedule an appointment call 1-866-BLOODSAVES (1-866-256-6372) or visit http://www.inova.org/donateblood.

The blood drive will be held in both the donor center and bloodmobiles parked outside of the donor center. Donors will be registered in the donor center and depending on the blood donation they chose – whole blood or apheresis donation – the donor will either stay in the center or donate in one of the bloodmobiles.

After their donation, donors can enjoy music, free food, giveaways and entertainment including the Inova Loudoun Hospital mobile health bus, a Fun Bus for kids, street hockey provided by Ashburn Icehouse and more.

In March the Caps and Inova Blood Donor Services collected 609 total units of blood from 642 Caps fans at their 2010 spring blood drive. This drive marked the most successful blood donation campaign hosted by a sports team in the Washington, D.C. area.

One blood donation can save up to three lives. There is an immediate need for most blood types. More than 200 blood and platelet donations are needed every day, year-round, by patients at the 15 hospitals served by Inova Blood Donor Services. Blood and platelets help many people, including trauma patients, surgery patients, newborn babies, cancer patients and transplant patients.
