Emery EC and King ES Skating Party

Thursday, 06.17.2010 / 12:06 PM / Community
To conclude its season-long partnership with Emery Education Campus and King Elementary School, Washington Capitals Charities (WCC) hosted 100 students from each school for a pizza and skating party at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Friday, June 11.

Students of all ages along with teachers and parents were bused from Emery in Northeast D.C. and King in Southeast D.C. to the Capitals’ training facility in Arlington, Va. The groups were treated to pizza for lunch and enjoyed complimentary face painting before they hit the ice. While many of the students had never ice skated before, they laced up skates and gave it a try. There were instructors on hand to help out, and Caps mascot Slapshot also skated with the children.

During the 2009-10 season WCC worked closely with Emery Education Campus and King Elementary School. WCC hosted service projects at both schools as part of the D.C. Public Schools Beatification Day in August and donated $10,000 to each school raised through the team’s Fall Puck Surprise fundraiser in November.

The Capitals also visited the schools several times during the school year. In November, Caps center Brendan Morrison visited King Elementary School, participating in Reading is Fundamental’s (RIF) live cultural exchange between King in Washington, D.C., and William Tyson Elementary School in Anchorage, Alaska. That same month Slapshot celebrated reading at Emery Education Campus for the school’s Young Readers’ Day. In February, Caps goaltender Jose Theodore, forward Jason Chimera and assistant coach Bob Woods brought Hockey School to King. The Capitals brought NHL legend Willie O’Ree to Emery to talk to 200 third- through eighth-grade students in March.
