Fourth Round, 112th overall – Philipp Grubauer, G, Windsor (OHL). Born November 25, 1991 in Rosenheim, Germany. 6-foot-0, 180 pounds, catches left.
In Philipp Grubauer, Washington has chosen a German goaltender for the third time in its draft history (Olaf Kolzig, Robert Mueller). Grubauer is a German-born goaltender who has played the last two seasons in the OHL for Belleville and most recently Windsor.
Central Scouting Bureau (ranked No. 15 among North American goaltenders)
Red Line Report (ranked No. 64): German native had a roller-coaster year before finishing on top. Started the season in Belleville, backstopping one of the OHL’s cellar dwellers before being dealt to the champion Spits. Was expected to anchor their back end, and for the most part did a solid job – but it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Benched for poor play in the OHL Western Conference Semis against Kitchener, but responded well after getting back in action, winning his last eight games in the OHL playoffs and four more in the Memorial Cup. Has good size and outstanding athleticism and flexibility. Overplays and overcommits, hanging himself out to dry. But never gives up on a play and often makes the spectacular style save. Mentally strong and always battles back from adversity. Makes the first stop, but rebound control is sketchy. Must economize his movements at the next level.

This kid is a winner! Grubauer was superb when called upon during recent Memorial Cup tournament helping lead the Spitfires to their second straight MasterCard Memorial Cup. He was a calming and consistent force when he was between the pipes. He squares himself to the shooter very well and has amazing focus and confidence when facing a shooter. He has tremendous low reflexes and takes away passing lanes from sides of net with his stick. His rebound control is very strong as he almost always kicks them to the corners or side boards.

“Grubauer was pulled in Windsor’s third round series against Kitchener only to return, reeling off eight straight wins en route to Windsor’s second straight OHL championship. He’s an athletic goaltender that relies on his strong relflexes. Grubauer is hard to beat laterally due to his quickness and agility. He can also cover the majority of the ice down low by doing the splits as he moves from post to post. Grubauer has an adequate glove hand, but he’s a very streaky performer. He can be beat with high rising shots due to his aggressive and hunched over style. Grubauer doesn’t possess much technique or size as he is a classic European flopper.
