ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals partnered with Coca-Cola to host a “Live Positively” clinic at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va., on Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Capitals and Coca-Cola invited 150 students from three middle schools in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., to participate in the clinic.

The students visited three stations during the clinic - lunch, hockey equipment and exercise – before they enjoyed an open ice-skating session with Capitals’ mascot Slapshot. At the first station nutritionist Rima Kleiner taught the students the importance of healthy eating habits while the students ate wraps, fruits, vegetables and hummus. She explained to the students that eating healthy is an important part of the growing process.

The second station was the equipment station where students learned what the different pieces of hockey equipment are used for and had a chance to touch and try on the different equipment. This station was led by Caps’ amateur hockey and fan development coordinator Peter Robinson.

The last station was led by the Caps’ strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish. Nemish taught the kids hockey-specific exercises that he incorporates into the players’ workout regimen. The kids ran a short distance which helped show them the explosive power that hockey players use during games. They also did squats to help demonstrate how strong hockey players’ legs are to last a whole 60-minute game.

The three schools who participated in the clinic were Walker Middle School in Capitol Heights, Md., Williamsburg Middle School in Arlington, Va. and Two Rivers Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.
