Led by Woods, Fehr and Gordon instructed the students on puck-handling, passing and shooting before hosting a skills competition. Following the competition, the students scrimmaged with the pair of players, including a students-versus-teachers scrimmage that the students won. The hour-long program concluded with the Capitals donating the hockey equipment to the middle school.
“The kids seemed to really pick up the different hockey skills,” said Fehr. “Fehrsie and I just tried to teach the students different drills,” said Gordon. All students who participated in the session received autographed player cards from Fehr and Gordon and Caps squishy pucks and Hockey 101 booklets.
This was the fifth Capitals Hockey School visit this season. The Capitals will host two Hockey School visits a month between September and May, donating street hockey equipment to each participating school.
This is the fourth-consecutive year the Capitals have conducted their Hockey School program. The Caps hosted more than 30 clinics and reached nearly 5,000 students the past three years. During the 2009-10 season alone, thousands of elementary and middle school students graduated from the program.
