Jason Chimera and Assistant Coach Bob Woods Host Capitals Hockey School at Highland Elementary School

ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals left wing Jason Chimera and assistant coach Bob Woods visited Highland Elementary School in Silver Spring, Md., to host the Capitals Hockey School presented by Capital One Bank.
Chimera and Woods began the session by fielding questions from students in the school’s gymnasium before leading a floor hockey clinic with the 140 fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students. One of the questions asked by the students was what would Chimera be if he weren’t playing hockey. Chimera answered that he would be a teacher, which got a rousing applause by all the teachers in attendance.
Led by Woods, Chimera demonstrated puck-handling, passing and shooting skills, teaching students proper techniques and giving them hands-on instruction. Two students were called up to put goalie equipment on and Chimera shot pucks at them in net to help warm them up for the all-student shootout. One boy and one girl student, each getting instructions from Chimera, had six chances to score a goal in the shootout against their own student goalies. The shootout ended in a 0-0 tie.
The clinic concluded with several scrimmages of boys versus girls in which the students played alongside Chimera and Woods. At the end of the hour-long program, the Capitals donated the set of floor hockey equipment to the school.
“The kids were very excited to see us today, they had their faces painted and had awesome questions waiting for us,” said Chimera. “The student goalies played really well in the shootout and the scrimmage, which ended in a 3-2 win for the boys. It was a really fun afternoon for me and Woodsie (Bob Woods).”
This was the eighth Capitals Hockey School presented by Capital One Bank visit this season. The Capitals will host two Hockey School visits a month between September and May, donating street hockey equipment to each participating school.
This is the fourth-consecutive year the Capitals have conducted their Hockey School program. The Caps hosted more than 30 clinics and reached nearly 5,000 students the past three years. During the 2009-10 season alone, thousands of elementary and middle school students graduated from the program.
