ARLINGTON, Va. – Virginia Hospital Center Foundation, the Washington Capitals and the Caps’ Better Halves raised $60,300 for the Chris Walsh Cancer Survivorship Fund at the Bowling with the Caps event on Feb. 5. The Capitals Charities donated $25,000 to the fund which was recently established by team internist Chris Walsh, a cancer survivor.

Capitals’ Karl Alzner and fiancée Mandy Flemmer, Matt Bradley, Jason Chimera, Eric and Rachel Fehr, Boyd Gordon and girlfriend Samantha Casey, Matt and Kim Hendricks, D. J. King, Mike and Megan Knuble, Brooks Laich, Jeff Schultz and girlfriend Mackenzie Keeley, David and Diondra Steckel and mascot Slaphot all participated in the event at Lucky Strike Lanes.

“The Washington Capitals are a team with a lot of heart,” said Steven A. Rubloff, president of Virginia Hospital Center Foundation. “After playing in Tampa Bay the night before, 11 players and their spouses and families attended to support cancer survivorship programs at the hospital. Their support means so much to our patients and families.”

The Capitals’ wives and girlfriends choose a charity to donate $25,000 of the money raised during the Caps Care Casino Night and Auction every year. This year they selected the Chris Walsh Cancer Survivorship Fund at Virginia Hospital Center as the beneficiary. Survivorship is the experience of living with, through and beyond cancer for both patients and the people in their lives who are impacted by the diagnosis. The Chris Walsh Cancer Survivorship Fund will be housed in Virginia Hospital Center’s Cancer Resource Center and will be staffed to help cancer survivors cope with a complex world of emotional, physical, financial and legal issues.

Virginia Hospital Center, a nonprofit, teaching and research hospital, is committed to providing access to state-of-the-art technology, compassionate skilled physicians and staff and an array of ancillary and support services, to best guide patients with cancer through the continuum of diagnosis, planning, treatment and recovery.
