ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine, right wing Boyd Gordon, assistant coach Bob Woods and mascot Slapshot visited Powell Elementary School in Washington, D.C., to host the Capitals Hockey School presented by Capital One Bank.

Erskine, Gordon and Woods began the session by fielding questions from students in the school’s multi-purpose room before leading a floor hockey clinic for 90 second, third and fourth-grade students. Led by Woods, Erskine and Gordon demonstrated puck-handling, passing and shooting skills, taught students proper techniques and gave them hands-on instruction.

The clinic concluded with a shootout where one boy and one girl student were called to come up and show off their skills that they learned during the clinic. The boys versus girls shootout had the students shooting on Slapshot in one of the nets while one of the girl students put on the goalie equipment and manned the other net   At the end of the hour-long program, the Capitals donated the set of floor hockey equipment to the school.

“The girl who got in the net and played goalie was really good, she stopped a couple of those tough shots” said Erskine. “I’ve done a couple of these Hockey Schools and they are always fun, the kids really have a good time,” said Gordon.

This was the 11th Capitals Hockey School presented by Capital One Bank visit this season. The Capitals host two Hockey School visits a month between September and May, donating street hockey equipment to each participating school.

This is the fourth-consecutive year the Capitals have conducted their Hockey School program. The Caps hosted more than 30 clinics and reached nearly 5,000 students the past three years. During the 2009-10 season alone, thousands of elementary and middle school students graduated from the program.
