Mike Green visits White House for First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative

Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green joined First Lady Michelle Obama, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, USA Hockey executive director Dave Ogrean and the Chicago Blackhawks at The White House on March 11 for a street hockey clinic. The clinic for local youngsters, which was conducted by members of the Blackhawks and Washington Capitals, is part of a new collaboration between Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, the NHL and USA Hockey to encourage American children to lead active and healthy lives.
Bettman talked about the NHL’s partnership with Let’s Move! and Ogrean presented the First Lady with a USA Hockey “FLOTUS” jersey. Bettman introduced Obama, who talked about the Let’s Move! initiative, stressing that children need to get 60 minutes of exercise a day. Green, Obama, Bettman, Ogrean, Blackhawks alternate captain Patrick Sharp and students from Powell Elementary School then participated in a ceremonial puck drop to start the clinic. The clinic participants were third and fourth-grade students from Powell Elementary School, the school the Capitals adopted during the 2010-11 season, 13-18-year-olds from the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Program and local members of the American Special Hockey Association.
The NHL built a rink on the driveway on the South Lawn that was divided into four interactive sections: a warm up area where children did exercises, stickhandle challenge area, hardest shot and an area for scrimmaging. All of the participants were divided into groups and each received either a Capitals or Blackhawks jersey.
Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. The five pillars of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative are: creating a healthy start for children, empowering parents and caregivers, providing healthy food in schools, improving access to healthy, affordable foods and increasing physical activity. Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity, including parents and caregivers, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies.
