ARLINGTON, VA. – The Washington Capitals have signed Mike Knuble to a one-year contract extension, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A 6’3”, 227-pound right wing, Knuble (kuh-NOO-buhl) recorded 40 points (24 goals, 16 assists) and 36 penalty minutes while playing in 79 games with the Capitals this season. The 38-year old, who ranked third on the team in goals, became the eighth active player in the league to have scored at least 20 goals in eight straight seasons. Knuble finished the season with 13 points (nine goals, four assists) in his last 14 games and his 24 goals were the third-most for all players aged 35 and older, trailing only Martin St. Louis (31) and Teemu Selanne (31).

Last season, Knuble collected 53 points (29 goals, 24 assists) and 23 penalty minutes in his first year with Washington. He ranked fourth on the team in goals and registered his fifth 50-plus-point season in his career.

Knuble has played 968 NHL games with Washington, Detroit, the New York Rangers, Boston and Philadelphia in a career spanning 14 seasons. He has 268 goals and 254 assists (589 points), including career highs in goals (34), assists (31) and points (65) in 2005-06, his first season with the Flyers. He has 589 penalty minutes, 80 power-play goals, 35 game-winners and a career plus/minus rating of +95. Knuble has averaged 27 goals and 25 assists (52 points) over the course of the last eight seasons and has played in 615 of 656 games (94%) in that time. A veteran of back-to-back Stanley Cup winners in his first two years in the league with Detroit, Knuble has collected 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) in 48 career playoff games.

Born in Toronto, Knuble played high school hockey in Michigan and played four years for the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). He reached three Frozen Fours with the Wolverines, was a second-team All-American as a senior and was a two-time second-team All-CCHA selection.
