Caps Host Pep Rally at Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School

Thursday, 04.14.2011 / 5:33 PM / Community

The Washington Capitals hosted a pep rally for 100 third-grade students on Thursday, April 14, at Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School in Alexandria, Va.. Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School was selected for the round one Caps Pep Rally because they submitted a photo showing students holding signs and displaying their Caps spirit as part of their entry for the Caps Sign Contest.

The hour-long pep rally kicked off with Capitals radio announcer Steve Kolbe congratulating the students and introducing the Capitals team mascot, Slapshot. The two revved up the students, getting them excited about the pep rally and the Caps playoff run.

The students were divided into five groups and headed to their first station where they received Caps “Capitalize” playoff T-shirts. At each of the five stations, students had the opportunity to: participate in a street hockey scrimmage outside on the blacktop, test their shot accuracy at the Slapshot inflatable, take a photo with Slapshot, help create banners to be hung above the Caps practice rink at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and learn, ask questions about and try on hockey equipment.

Lastly, students and teachers chanted their support for the Caps during the playoffs and posed for pictures alongside Slapshot with the banners they had made. The banners now hang above the Caps practice rink displaying Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School’s support for the team. The Caps also donated “Rock the Red” rally towels and Caps posters for all of the third graders.

The Capitals are asking local schools and classes to support the team’s playoff run by making signs to show their Caps spirit. Principals, teachers, students and parents are encouraged to get their schools involved. Email a photo of your class or school with a Caps sign or signs – this could be one huge sign made by the entire school or a class full of students exhibiting their individual signs. Feel free to incorporate unique slogans, Caps memorabilia, player pictures and of course lots of red into your signs and photos. The Capitals will decide which classes and schools have the most Caps spirit. For each round of the playoffs one class or school will be selected as a winner.
