Washington Capitals Alumni Sylvain Cote and Paul Mulvey Host Capitals Hockey School at Louise Archer Elementary School

Washington Capitals alumni Sylvain Cote and Paul Mulvey and mascot Slapshot hosted Capitals Hockey School presented by Capital One Bank on May 3 for 170 sixth-grade students at Louise Archer Elementary School in Vienna, Va.

The one-hour assembly began with a question-and-answer session during which Cote and Mulvey talked about their careers as professional athletes and their time in the National Hockey League. Students then asked questions about the Capitals and the game of hockey.

After the Q&A session, the alumni led a floor hockey clinic for the students, introducing them to basic hockey skills such as puck-handling, passing and shooting. Cote and Mulvey demonstrated each skill, teaching the students proper techniques and giving them hands-on instruction. Several student volunteers were selected to try out what they learned in front of their peers.

The clinic concluded with a pair of scrimmages in which the boys and girls faced off against each other before the members of the school’s staff played against the Caps alumni. At the end of the program the Capitals donated the set of floor hockey equipment to the school.

This was the 16th Capitals Hockey School presented by Capital One Bank visit this season. The Capitals host two Hockey School visits each month between September and May, donating street hockey equipment to each participating school.

This is the fourth-consecutive year the Capitals have conducted their Hockey School program. The Caps hosted more than 30 clinics and reached nearly 5,000 students the past three years. During the 2009-10 season alone, thousands of elementary and middle school students graduated from the program.
