Capitals Make Four Selections on Second Day of NHL Draft

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals selected goaltender Steffen Soberg, defenseman Patrick Koudys, center Travis Boyd and defenseman Garrett Haar on the second day of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, held Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Washington traded their first round pick (26th overall) to Chicago on Friday for right wing Troy Brouwer.
Soberg, a Norwegian-born goaltender who played this past season with Manglerud, was named one of Norway’s top three players at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship, posting a 3.90 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage in six games. In 27 games with Manglerud of the GET-ligaen, Norway’s premier hockey league, Soberg posted a 4.17 goals-against average and an .884 save percentage.
Koudys (COW-dice), a 6’3”, 198-pound defenseman from Smithville, Ontario, recently completed his freshman season at Rensselaer (R.P.I.) in the Eastern College Athletic Conference of the NCAA. He played in 32 games, recording a goal, two assists and 14 penalty minutes. One of the youngest players in the NCAA, Koudys was ranked 76th overall among North American skaters.
Boyd, a 5’11”, 185-pound native of Hopkins, Minnesota, recorded 18 points (5 goals, 13 assists) in 24 games with the U.S. National Development team. The center finished tied for first in assists and fifth in points on the team in 2010-11 and will attend the University of Minnesota this fall.
Haar, a Huntington Beach, California, native recorded 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) in 51 games with the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League. The 5’11”, 190-pound blueliner was tied for second on Fargo amongst defensemen in goals and was ranked 119th among North American skaters.
All of today's Capitals selections are scheduled to attend the Capitals Prospect Development Camp at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on July 10-16.
