Capitals Sign Defenseman Danny Richmond

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed free agent defenseman Danny Richmond to a one-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
 
Richmond, 26, recorded 23 points (three goals, 20 assists) and 121 penalty minutes in 68 games last season with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). He finished the season ranked third on the team in penalty minutes and third amongst defensemen in points and assists.
 
The 6’, 192-pound defenseman has collected 155 points (32 goals, 123 assists) and 957 penalty minutes in 433 career AHL games with Lowell, Norfolk, Rockford, Wilkes-Barre, Peoria and Toronto. He won a gold medal with the United States at the 2004 U-20 World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland. In 49 career NHL games with Carolina and Chicago, Richmond has tallied three assists and 75 penalty minutes.
 
The Chicago, Illinois, native was originally selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round (31st overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
