ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson participated in the 4th Annual Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra Celebrity Soccer Challenge benefiting the Mia Hamm Foundation and Children’s National Medical Center on Sunday, July 31, at Kastles Stadium at The Wharf in Washington, D.C.

For four years, the Mia Hamm Foundation organized the Garrett Game, an annual soccer exhibition contest named after Hamm’s late brother, Garrett, who died in 1997 from a bone marrow disease.

In 2011, the fourth year of this annual event, the Soccer Challenge moved to Washington, D.C., with local celebrities and media personalities joining Hamm and Garciaparra in a 7 vs. 7 exhibition outing. Carlson’s FC Mia team defeated Nomar United’s squad 13-12 in overtime, with Carlson providing an assist on the game-winning tally.

“It was just an amazing experience to be part of something like this,” said Carlson. “I grew up watching Nomar play, so when I heard that he and Mia were hosting this event in Washington, D.C., I jumped at the opportunity to get involved. It was a fantastic event, but most importantly it was great to raise money and awareness for the Mia Hamm Foundation and Children’s National Medical Center.”
