Jeff Schultz at Ashlawn Elementary School

Wednesday, 09.14.2011 / 9:35 AM / Community
Washington Capitals defenseman Jeff Schultz visited Ashlawn Elementary School in Arlington, Va., on Friday, Sept. 9. The school, consisting of more than 400 students and faculty, received an assembly as the overall winner of the 2010-11 Caps Care Click to Win initiative.

Ashlawn Elementary School earned a Capitals player visit by having the highest number of votes – more than 200,000 – of all the schools that participated in the Caps Care Click to Win program’s online polls from October to May. Schultz was joined by the new radio voice of the Capitals, John Walton, who emceed the event.

To kick off the program, Walton welcomed the students back to school and commended the students and staff on their success through the Caps Care Click to Win program. Walton then introduced Schultz, who fielded dozens of questions from the students. Once the question-and-answer session portion of the assembly was complete, the fifth-graders did a special dance performance for Schultz and their fellow students.

At the end of the assembly, Walton turned to ask the students Caps trivia. Students who answered the questions correctly received a Capitals fan pack from Jeff Schultz.

The school’s students and staff were presented with a $1,500 check, which they earned for being selected to participate in Caps Care Click to Win and for having the highest number of votes during the December poll. The Capitals also donated a 2010-11 Washington Capitals team autographed home jersey to be displayed in the school.

Through last season’s Caps Care Click to Win initiative, 40 Washington metropolitan area schools were granted $28,000 by Washington Capitals Charities.
