Capitals Team Up with U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to Host Toy Drive at Verizon Center
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals are teaming up with Comcast SportsNet, Elliot in the Morning, The Washington Examiner and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to host their 12th annual Capitals’ Toy Drive presented by GEICO on Dec. 9 when the Capitals host the Toronto Maple Leafs at Verizon Center.

Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the F Street entrance of Verizon Center where Caps Better Halves Mandy Flemmer (Karl Alzner), Kim Hendricks, Mackenzie Keeley (Jeff Schultz) and Lindsay MacDonald (Dennis Wideman) will be collecting toys with Marines starting at 5:30 p.m. The first 2,000 fans who bring a toy will receive a free poster featuring Capitals captain and toy drive spokesman Alex Ovechkin.

To help kick off the Capitals Toys for Tots season, Ovechkin, Comcast SportsNet analyst and Caps alumnus Alan May, Elliot Segal from Elliot in the Morning and the GEICO Gecko spent more than $10,000 donated by Washington Capitals Charities shopping for toys for the toy drive at Toys “R” Us on Dec. 2.

The Toys for Tots Drive will benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to underserved children. All of the toys collected will be distributed as holiday gifts to children in need in the Washington, D.C., area. JK Moving Services, Inc. will provide a truck to transport the toys to the Toys for Tots warehouse.

Last season, the Capitals and their fans raised more than $5,000 and filled a 17-foot JK Moving truck with toys. This year the Capitals, GEICO, Comcast SportsNet, Elliot in the Morning, The Examiner and the Marine Corps Reserve are challenging fans again to fill a 17-foot JK Moving truck with toys, all of which will be displayed on F Street.
