November Caps@School Winners

Tuesday, 12.13.2011 / 10:07 AM / Community
Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward visited Barcroft Elementary School in Arlington, Va., on Thursday, Dec. 8 as part of the Washington Capitals Caps@School program. As the November winner of the Caps@School contest, physical education teacher Denise Brown won a player visit from the Caps and a Chipotle burrito party for her entire fifth-grade class. Brown used the Caps@School health and physical education lesson plan with her students who also read one of the mini stories featuring Joel Ward as a homework assignment.

Ward began the visit by telling the fifth-graders about himself and his path to the NHL, stressing to the students the importance of getting a good education, dreaming big and working hard to achieve their goals. Ward then took questions from the students who asked him about his life as a professional hockey player.

After the question-and-answer session the students enjoyed burritos, chips and salsa courtesy of Chipotle and had an opportunity to play floor hockey with Ward in the school’s gymnasium. Each student went home with an autographed Ward player card and a pair of tickets to the Caps Jan. 3 game at Verizon Center.

Through the Caps@School program, the Capitals are making available to local educators a free, online curriculum-enhancing teaching tool for first- through sixth-grade classes. The Caps@School website features lesson plans with Caps players, player fun facts, stories and more.

Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., teachers can enroll their classes for free and start to download lesson plans at the Caps@School website at CapsAtSchool.com.
