ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and defenseman Dennis Wideman have been selected to participate in the 2012 NHL All-Star Celebration festivities to be held Jan. 26-29 in Ottawa, Ontario, the league announced today. Ovechkin and Wideman will be part of the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft on Thursday, Jan. 26, to determine teams for the NHL All-Star Skills Competition event on Saturday and the All-Star Game on Sunday.

Ovechkin, 26, will be making his fifth-consecutive NHL All-Star appearance, tying the Capitals club record (Peter Bondra). He currently leads the Capitals in goals (17), shots (156) and power-play goals (6) and ranks second on the team in points (33) and hits (133). His 156 shots rank seventh in the NHL.

Wideman, 28, will be making his first appearance at an NHL All-Star Game. The Kitchener, Ontario, native currently ranks fifth in the league among defensemen in points (29), tied for fourth in goals (8), tied for fifth in assists (21) and leads the Capitals in average ice time (24:08).

Ovechkin was selected, first overall, by the Capitals in the first round of the 2004 Entry Draft. Wideman was acquired from Florida in a trade on Feb. 28, 2011.
