Caps Care Casino Night and Auction Raises More Than $350,000 for Charity

Tuesday, 02.14.2012 / 10:21 AM / Community
ARLINGTON, Va. - More than 600 fans helped the Washington Capitals raise a record number $353,851 for charity at the third-annual Caps Care Casino Night and Auction sponsored by Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races on Feb. 10 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, Va. A majority of the money raised will benefit Washington Capitals Charities, which supports community programs in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The Children’s Hospital Foundation will receive $25,000, which will be donated to the hospital’s uncompensated care fund for uninsured and underinsured patients. Love for Lokomotiv will also receive a portion of the proceeds.

Some of the most popular auction items at the event included:
  • Legends Dinner: Four fans will enjoy dinner with Capitals legends Peter Bondra, Dale Hunter, Olie Kolzig and Rod Langway at Rustico Restaurant & Bar in Arlington and will have the opportunity to talk hockey with some of the greatest Caps to ever play the game while enjoying some of the finest food in the Washington area. ($19,500)
  • Cooking with the Caps and Top Chef Spike Mendelsohn: Four fans will join Caps defensemen Mike Green and Roman Hamrlik and goaltender Tomas Vokoun, along with Top Chef All-Star, The Next Iron Chef contestant and owner of D.C.’s own Good Stuff Eatery and We the Pizza Spike Mendelsohn for a cooking lesson. While Chef Spike will lead the lesson, Hamrlik and Vokoun will also be able to offer helpful pointers as both have graduated from culinary school. Green also knows his way around the kitchen as one of his creations was featured in Mendelsohn’s “The Good Stuff Cookbook.” ($11,500)
Doors opened at 7 p.m. and VIP ticket holders were able to mingle with the entire team along with coaches and owners. After the VIP reception, the players entered the ballroom casino, which featured blackjack, craps, roulette and Texas hold ’em. There were also instructional gaming tables and Wii video game stations.

The evening included a silent auction and raffle where participants were able to bid on and buy tickets to win autographed sports memorabilia and Capitals’ game-used equipment and a drawing that guests could enter with their “earnings” from the casino games.

Washington Capitals Charities would like to thank all of the sponsors who helped make the night a success: Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, The Leonsis Foundation, Accenture, M.C. Dean, Inc., Capital One Bank, GEICO, Robert and Paula Hisaoka, Intelligent Decisions, Inc., The Mody Foundation, Mercedes Benz of Arlington and Mercedes Benz of Alexandria, Fernandez Foundation, Carl M. Freeman Foundation, Good Stuff Eatery, Perone Communications & Consulting, Salamander Hotels & Resorts, Sentrillion, Show Biz Productions, LLC and SMI Sign Systems, Inc.
