ARLINGTON, Va. – Four Washington Capitals players – Karl Alzner, Jeff Halpern, Matt Hendricks and Mike Knuble – and Capitals mascot Slapshot visited Children’s National Medical Center on Monday, Feb. 27, to spend time with patients. This was the first of two visits the Capitals will make to Children’s National Medical Center this season.

The players played video games and participated in an arts and crafts project with patients in the hospital’s atrium before heading to a playroom where they visited children who weren’t able to leave their floor. There they created door hangers, played hangman and tic-tac-toe and took pictures with the patients. The players also passed out pencils, dog tags, key rings, tattoos and signed player cards.

“We got to come here today and see some kids who aren’t able to get out and see us play,” said Hendricks. “I don’t know exactly what everyone’s going through but I’m glad I get to come here and give my support.”

“These kids are going through some tough patches and we’re just trying to make their day better by spending time with them,” said Alzner.

The Capitals players along with their wives and girlfriends have made a tradition of visiting Children’s National Medical Center each season. This was the 12th consecutive season the Capitals have visited the hospital.

Children’s National Medical Center is the only exclusive provider of pediatric care in the metropolitan Washington area and is the only freestanding children’s hospital between Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Norfolk, and Atlanta. Serving the nation’s children for more than 140 years, Children’s National is a proven leader in the development and application of innovative new treatments for childhood illness and injury.
