Washington Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth visited Armstrong Elementary School in Reston, Va., on Wednesday, Feb. 29 as part of the Washington Capitals Caps@School program. School Age Child Care (SACC) supervisor Christine Lamkin won the player visit from the Caps and a Chipotle burrito party for the 22 students in her afterschool day care program by entering the Caps@School monthly contest. Lamkin used the Caps@School health and physical education lesson plan with her students by incorporating it into their four-week fitness program. Each student made their own fitness challenge tracking sheet to record their physical fitness progress during the course of the program. The students also read several Caps@School stories to improve their literacy skills.

Neuvirth began the visit by telling the students about himself before taking questions from the students, each of whom asked Neuvirth at least one question about his life as a professional hockey player for the Washington Capitals.

After the question-and-answer session the students enjoyed burritos, chips and salsa courtesy of Chipotle. Neuvirth signed autographs for the students as they ate and posed for a group photo before leaving the school.

Through the Caps@School program, the Capitals are making available to local educators a free, online curriculum-enhancing teaching tool for first- through sixth-grade classes. The Caps@School website features lesson plans with Caps players, player fun facts, stories and more.

Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., teachers can enroll their classes for free and start to download lesson plans at the Caps@School website at CapsAtSchool.com.
