ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed free agent defenseman Cameron Schilling to a two-year entry-level contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Cameron was a highly sought-after college free agent and we are delighted that he signed with the Washington Capitals,” said McPhee. “He will be a solid pro for many years."

The 6’2”, 197-pound blueliner spent last season with Miami University (Ohio) and recorded 14 points (one goal, 13 assists), 20 penalty minutes and was a plus-13 in 39 games as a senior. He helped Miami to a 24-15-2 record during the regular season before falling to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in the NCAA tournament. Schilling helped Miami finish the regular season with the top-ranked defense in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), allowing just 1.97 goals per game.

Schilling, 23, played in 144 collegiate games during his four-year career with Miami, collecting 57 points (eight goals, 49 assists) and 155 penalty minutes. He was a member of two NCAA All-Regional Teams (2008-2010) and helped Miami win the 2010-11 CCHA Championship. In 2009, Schilling and Miami participated in the Frozen Four at Verizon Center. The Carmel, Indiana, native spent the 2007-08 season with Indiana of the USHL, compiling 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 55 games. He was teammates with current Capitals blueliner John Carlson with Indiana.

Schilling’s contract will begin next season (2012-13). He will report to Hershey this week and will begin playing on a tryout agreement for the remainder of this season.
