This Date in Caps History - October 8
On October 8, 1988, the Capitals evened their record with a 6-2 home ice win over the Buffalo Sabres at the Capital Centre.
Washington's Dave Christian started the scoring with his second goal of the season at 6:51 of the first period. Just 23 seconds later, John Tucker tied it for Buffalo with sophomore defenseman Calle Johansson assisting on the goal. Dale Hunter netted his first of the season - a power play strike - at 17:59 of the first to give the Caps a lead they would not relinquish. The Caps outshot the Sabres 8-4 in the first period.
Geoff Courtnall got the Caps started with a goal at 2:37 of the second period. Bobby Gould made it 4-1 Caps with a shorthanded goal at the 6:52 mark of the middle period. The Caps held an 11-9 advantage in second period shots on goal.
Kevin Hatcher scored his first of the season at 1:58 of the third period to continue the barrage against beleaguered Buffalo goaltender Tom Barrasso. Tucker beat Washington's Pete Peeters for the second time at 4:59 to pull the Sabres within three, but Christian closed out the scoring on the power play at 13:09 with his second of the game and third of the season. Daren Puppa came in to mop up in the nets for Buffalo after Christian's goal. The Caps outshot the Sabres 11-9 in the third and 30-22 on the night.
Christian had an assist to go with his two goals and earned number one star honors. Gould was the game's second star and Buffalo's Tucker took the third star.
