On October 19, 1991, the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils by a 5-1 score at Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey. Just a night earlier, the Caps defeated the Devils 6-5 at USAir Arena in the first game of a home-and-home set.

Dmitri Khristich scored his fourth goal of the year just 1:08 into the game to give Washington an early advantage. New Jersey’s Claude Lemieux netted his fifth of the campaign at 12:08 to knot the score. Washington’s John Druce tallied at 17:13 to give Washington the lead for good.

The Capitals’ Mike Lalor scored at 1:52 of the second, beating New Jersey’s Chris Terreri to extend the Washington lead to 3-1. With just 17 seconds remaining in the middle period, Khristich scored his second of the game to ice the contest for the Capitals.

Mike Ridley’s third period goal put the game further out of reach. The Caps had 30 shots on Terreri while New Jersey was able to muster only 20 against Washington’s Jim Hrivnak. With two goals on the night, Khristich earned number one star honors. Ridley, who had a goal and an assist, was named the number two star. The Caps’ Todd Krygier picked up two assists to skate off with the third star designation.
