On November 27, 1992, the Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins by a 6-4 score before a sellout crowd of 18,130 at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD.

Pittsburgh got on the board first when Kevin Stevens beat Washington netminder Jim Hrivnak at 10:44 of the first period. Pat Elynuik - with assists from Al Iafrate and Dale Hunter - tied the game with his fifth goal of the season at 11:56. With the Caps a man short because of a too many men on the ice infraction, Todd Krygier took an elbowing penalty to put Washington down two men at 15:25. Just 16 seconds later, Pittsburgh’s Rick Tocchet put the Pens ahead when he beat Hrivnak. Each team had 11 shots on goal for the period.

Just 43 seconds into the second period, Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux scored his 27th goal of the season to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead. At 5:49, Iafrate took apass from Hrivnak and scored his third of the season on a Washington power play to pull the Caps within one. At 8:47 of the middle frame, Washington’s Bobby Carpenter tucked one past Pittsburgh netminder Tom Barrasso to even the score at 3-3. Carpenter’s goal - his third of the season - was unassisted. At 11:40 of the second period, Krygier scored his sixth of the season to give the Caps a lead they would not relinquish. Elynuik and Dmitri Khristich assisted on Krygier’s goal. The Capitals held a decided 18-7 advantage in shots on goal for the second period.

At 9:39 of the third, Elynuik and Sylvain Cote helped set up Iafrate’s second goal of the game to push the Washington lead to 5-3. Stevens netted his second of the game at 14:18 to pull the Pens within one, but Mike Ridley dumped his ninth of the season into an empty Pittsburgh net at 19L40 to ice the win for Hrivnak and the Caps. The Caps edged the Pens in third period shots on goal by a 9-8 count and held a 38-26 advantage in that department on the evening.

With two goals and an assist, Iafrate was the game’s first star. Elynuik - with a goal and two helpers - was the second star. Stevens also had two goals and an assist and was named the third star.
