On November 29, 1980, the Washington Capitals traveled to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs in the back end of a home-and-home series. The night before, the Caps had rolled to a 6-2 win over the Leafs behind a pair of goals from Dennis Maruk.

Midway through the first period of the November 29 game, the Leafs took a 2-1 lead on a Dan Maloney goal (Mike Gartner had scored for Washington). But the Capitals were about to storm back.

Maruk's 20th goal of the young season came just 11 seconds after Maloney's tally. Bob Kelly added a pair to close out the first, and Washington carried a 4-2 lead to the dressing room.

The Capitals' Wes Jarvis scored the only second period goal. Jarvis scored Washington's fifth straight marker at the 1:54 mark of the third, and the Caps now had a comfortable 6-2 lead. When Gartner scored his second of the game at 16:33, it also set a team road record with six unanswered goals. The record would stand for nearly 11 years. (The Caps scored eight in an 8-0 win at Pittsburgh on October 29, 1991.) Toronto's Rocky Saganiuk added a meaningless goal with 16 seconds left, and the Caps went home with a 7-3 victory.
