This Date in Caps History - November 30

On November 30, 1976, the Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins by a 6-4 score in front of a sparse gathering of 7,745 at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD.

With Bernie Wolfe in goal for the Capitals and Dunc Wilson manning the nets for the Penguins, the two teams skated through a scoreless first period. Washington had 14 shots on Wilson while the Pens countered with nine on Wolfe.

Pittsburgh’s Syl Apps started the scoring with a shorthanded goal at the 2:08 mark of the second period. Just 35 seconds later, Washington evened the score on the same power play when Tony White scored with assists from Guy Charron and Rick Green. At 5:36, Pittsburgh’s Jean Pronovost restored the Penguins’ advantage when he put one behind Wolfe. Less than two minutes later, Washington’s Mike Lampman tied the game with Gord Lane and Bob Sirois assisting. Hartland Monahan scored for the Caps at 13:35 to give Washington a one-goal lead. Ace Bailey and Charron assisted on Monahan’s goal. At 16:40, the Penguins’ Wayne Bianchin tallied to tie the game at 3-3. Pittsburgh outshot Washington by a 15-13 margin in the third period.

At 8:45 of the third period, Pittsburgh’s Mike Corrigan scored to give the Pens their first lead since early in the first period. Bailey netted the tying goal for Washington at the 14:41 mark with help from Gord Smith and Charron. Gerry Meehan gave the Capitals a 5-4 lead with a goal at 16:37. Sirois and Lampman earned helpers on the Meehan marker. With just under a minute remaining, White scored his second of the game to ice the win for Washington. Doug Patey picked up the lone assist.
