This Date in Caps History - December 1
On December 1, 1983 the Capitals defeated the New Jersey Devils by a score of 8-4 at the Capital Centre in Landover. In the process,they rudely treated original Capitals' netminder Ron Low.
With Low in the nets for the Devils, the Capitals drew first blood. Doug Jarvis scored at 1:38 of the first period to give the Caps an early advantage. Rick Meagher's power play goal at 5:56 tied it for New Jersey. At 6:54, The Devils took a brief lead on Bob MacMillan's third goal of the season. Less than three minutes after MacMillan's goal, Washington's Dave Christian scored on a Capital power play - his eighth goal of the season - to knot the game at 2-2. Exactly three minutes after Christian's tally, New Jersey regained the lead on a Jeff Larmer goal. Washington's Chris Valentine closed out the first period scoring at 15:03. Valentine's fourth of the season - with an assist from Craig Laughlin - evened the score at 3-3. The Capitals held a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period.
Bengt Gustafsson scored at 8:13 of the second to give the Capitals a lead they would not relinquish. The goal was his 11th of the season. Valentine netted his second of the game at 13:51 to give Washington some breathing room. The Caps outshot the Devils 7-5 in the second.
Less than a minute into the third period, Alan Haworth extended the Washington lead to 6-3 when he tucked the puck past Low. Glen Currie scored the fifth straight Washington goal to make it 7-3 at 7:39. The Devils finally answered back at 15:44 when Neil Broten beat Capitals' netminder Al Jensen on a power play. Christian's second goal of the night closed out the scoring at 17:47 of the final frame. The Caps held a slim 10-9 edge in shots in the third and mustered 31 shots on the night to New Jersey's 21.
Low, who was the first player taken by Washington in the 1974 expansion draft, was 30-94-9 in three seasons as Washington's number one goaltender. He closed out his NHL playing career with the Devils in 1984-85 and is now the head coach of the New York Rangers.
