On December 8, 1983, the Washington Capitals defeated the Calgary Flames by a score of 4-3 before a miniscule gathering of 7,455 at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD.

Washington’s Bobby Carpenter started the scoring with his eighth goal of the season at 6:03 of the first period. Doug Jarvis and Larry Murphy assisted on the Carpenter goal. Just over a minute later, Calgary’s Jim Jackson tied the game with a shorthanded goal against Washington netminder Al Jensen. At 14:10, Tim Hunter - currently a Capitals’ assistant coach - scored to give Calgary a 2-1 lead. The Caps outshot the Flames by an 8-6 margin in the first period.

At 3:43 of the second period, the Flames’ Kent Nilsson scored to give Calgary a 3-1 lead. Dave Shand brought the Caps back to within one at 9:44 with his first of the season. Jarvis picked up his second assist of the night. At 10:22 of the period, Craig Laughlin tied the game for the Caps with his seventh of the season. Greg Adams and Carpenter assisted on the Laughlin marker. Washington outshot Calgary by 15-8 in the middle frame.

The third period was scoreless until 17:54 when Washington’s Gary McAdam scored what would prove to be his only goal in a Capitals uniform. Dave Christian and Rod Langway assisted on McAdam’s game-winner. The Flames outshot Washington 11-9 in the third period but the Caps held a 32-25 advantage in that department for the game.
