On January 6, 1998, Adam Oates had four assists and Calle Johansson scored a pair of goals top lead the Capitals to a 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at MCI Center.

Four different Capitals - Johansson, Mike Eagles, Andrew Brunette and Todd Krygier - notched first period goals with Oates assisting on each score. Oates' four assists in a single period tied a Washington club record.

Toronto made an effort to get back into the game on Steve Sullivan's goal late in the first period and Jeff Brown's second period tally. With just 16 seconds left in the second period, Johansson converted a Dale Hunter feed into a power play goal to give the Caps a commanding 5-2 advantage heading into the third period.

Toronto's Derek King closed out the scoring with 3:54 remaining in the third. Olie Kolzig stopped 18 of 21 shots to gain the win and Oates earned first-star honors.
