On January 11, 1996, the Washington Capitals defeated the Ottawa Senators by a 6-1 score in front of 11,511 fans at USAir Arena.

Ottawa got on the board first when Tom Chorske beat Washington netminder Jim Carey at the 5:28 mark of the first period. Washington’s PBJ Line evened things up at 17:47 when Peter Bondra netted his 22nd of the season, beating former Caps teammate Don Beaupre. Linemates Keith Jones and Michal Pivonka assisted on Bondra’s goal. Ottawa held a 10-6 edge in shots on goal in the first period.

The Capitals took the lead for good when Pivonka scored his fourth of the season on a Washington power play at 4:29 of the second. Bondra and Jones assisted on their linemate’s tally. At 10:36, Pivonka netted his second of the game to give the Caps a 3-1 lead. Bondra and Joe Reekie picked up the assists. Bondra closed out the second period scoring with his second of the night at 13:33, Joe Juneau and Pivonka assisting. Ottawa again held the advantage in shots on goal, 10-7.

Just 42 seconds into the third period, Bondra completed his hat trick. Pivonka and Jones assisted. At 4:27 of the final frame, Jones closed out the evening’s scoring by netting his 15th goal of the season. Pivonka and Calle Johansson had the helpers. The Caps outshot the Sens 13-4 in the third and 26-24 on the night.

The PBJ Line swept the three stars. With a hat trick and a pair of assists, Bondra was named the game’s first star. Pivonka’s six-point night (two goals, four assists) earned him the second star. Jones’s goal and three assists got him the third star designation.
