On January 13, 1998, the Washington Capitals shutout the Ottawa Senators in front of 11,109 fans at the MCI Center in Washington.

The Capitals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Andrew Brunette netted his seventh of the season at 1:40 of the first period. Peter Bondra extended the lead with his 28th of the season at 14:13 to close out the first period scoring. The Caps fired 12 shots on Ottawa goaltender Ron Tugnutt while the Senators managed 10 against Olaf Kolzig.

When Washington's Steve Konowalchuk scored on the Capitals' first shot of the second period, Ottawa bench boss Jacques Martin pulled Tugnutt in favor of Damian Rhodes. The Caps baptized Rhodes when Brunette scored his second of the game on a power play at 8:12. The Sens outshot Washington 9-6 in the second.

The two teams played through a scoreless third period with the Capitals holding a 7-5 edge in shots. Washington wound up the game with 25 shots on goal to Ottawa's 24.
